- in the molecular epidemiology of //Streptococcus pneumoniae// associated with infection. //S. pneumoniae// is recognized as an important cause of morbidity and mortality especially among pre-school children. Nevertheless this pathogen is also a normal colonizer of the nasopharynx of healthy individuals. The aim of the study is to characterize pneumococcal strains isolated from infectionsusing several phenotypic and genotypic methodologiesand identify characteristics of more virulent strains for further studies such as host-pathogen interaction.\\ +My current work focuses the molecular epidemiology of //Streptococcus pneumoniae// associated with invasive and non-invasive infection. I am particularly interested in the clonal composition of the population of //S. pneumoniae// isolated in children , with special attention to the invasive infections, and to evaluate the impact of the use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines in the serotype distribution and epidemiology of this important pathogen. I am also involved on the molecular diagnosis of complicated pneumoniasalso in childrenmainly caused by //S. pneumoniae//
